DerDUDE:
How did you come up with your band name? Does it have a background??
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Kees: The Dutch word for the game TicTacToe (Kasekastchen) is "Boter, Kaas
& eieren". Our first bassplayer changed "Kaas" to SKA, and
we all immediately loved it.
DerDUDE:
How would you specify your style as a ska band?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
The core of our music is up-tempo, 80's influenced SKA, and we combine that with other kinds of music like reggae, rock, punk, funk and soul. The reason for this crossover is that the bandmembers all have their own musical background and preferences. We do have a couple of songs which are just the opposite, like funk/rock with a hint of SKA, but in general we play SKA, very danceable and a lot of fun!
DerDUDE:
Which song would you suggest someone to listen to in order to get to know your
music best?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
That's a difficult question, because we have so many songs that have different
musical styles. The best thing to do is to listen to our new demo,
so you can get a good impression of our SKA-music. But, if we really have to
choose, have a look at what we picked out:
Lilian: Perfect Partner
Kees: Never grow up
Arnoud: Crap Suzette
Corrie: 6 out of 8
DerDUDE:
Which ska band/personality influenced you the most?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: The Energy and live performance of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Kees: The Specials, The Selecter, Lee Perry, Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster.
Arnoud: The Beat
DerDUDE:
Apart from ska, what music style influenced you the most?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: For me it started all with the 60's music of my parents.
Kees: Synthezisers (Kraftwerk, Devo, DAF), punk (Dead Kennedy's, Sex Pistols)
Arnoud: Really all kinds of music: sixties, seventies, eighties, folk, worldmusic,.
From country to avant-garde jazz, I digest them all.
DerDUDE:
What's your favorite cd/band?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: That changes every day! At the moment it's Out of Season by Beth Gibbons
& Rustin Man
Kees: The Upsetters: Vampire
Arnoud: I don't really have a favourite song or CD, but the Beat, Roxy Music
and Japan never bore me
DerDUDE:
What message are you trying to get across to people with your music?

Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
HAVE FUN AND DANCE!!!
DerDUDE:
Does ska have a political meaning for you, and if so what is it?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
None what so ever.
DerDUDE:
What were the best and worst venues you've played?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: The best one was the Oosterpark Festival in Amsterdam
(5.5.5). Take a look at the photo's on our website!
Worst: Winston International (4.5.4). Luckily, we don't have any pictures of
that one
Kees: In 1998 as support for the Specials in the Melkweg, Amsterdam. The Melkweg
was sold out and we started the gig with our leadsinger still somewhere in the
dressingroom. We had to improvise the first song, but it went so smooth that
nobody noticed!
The worst concert... can't remember, I must have banned it out of my memory.
Arnoud: I suppose the best one was when we were the support-act of The Selecter,
and Pauline Black said:…And Butter SKA and Eggythings were fucking great!
The worst one will be our Farewell-and-thanks-for-all-beer-gig,
but that one isn't planned for this life.
DerDUDE:
How would you describe your audience?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
People who love SKA, want to have fun and dance!
DerDUDE:
Which song do you usually play as an encore?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Kees: Ouwehoer!ences.
DerDUDE:
Have you got any weird touring experiences worth a mention?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Kees: to name a few, I once missed the stagefloor on my first jump, and landed
2 meters down in the audience. Somewhere else I thought it was cool to climb
up a pooltable for my solo, and I was almost beheaded by the ceiling-ventilator.
DerDUDE:
Which band would you most like to play with?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: For now with Venus Hill, because our saxofonists' wife is one of the
bandmembers.
Kees: Tokyo SKA Paradise Orchestra
Arnoud: I'm sooo predictable: The Beat
DerDUDE:
I've always been interested to know how you deal with Nazi-Skins at your gigs.
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
We ignore them as much as possible, and if they do or say something we don't
like, we stop playing.
DerDUDE:
There's a lot of talk about 3 ska waves. How far can you identify yourselves
with those? What do you think is going to come after the 3rd wave? What's the
future of ska?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: SKA has been around for a long time and always will be!
Kees: I suppose we are 3rd-wave SKA, and SKA will allways be around in the future.
Arnoud: I don't identify the band with one of the SKA-waves, I think the whole
SKA-wave thing is a bit of a myth. We're just a great SKA-band, that's it. And
for your second question: SKA was, is and always will be
DerDUDE:
Why do you think it is that most young bands either play traditional ska or
ska-punk?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: I don't believe that's the case.
Kees: Maybe because they were not there in the 80's, they missed it, and the
last 15 years the youth has been bombarded by commercial non-music, it's a reaction
I think.
Arnoud: I think it has to do with the eclectic retro-scene you find in all kinds
of pop-music nowadays. There is no real need or drive to discover new kinds
of music, but why that is exactly, I can't tell.
DerDUDE:
Why do you think it's so difficult for ska to establish itself? Do you think
ska is doomed to continue to play a minor role in the music scene?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: The audience wants to see SKA-bands, but the programmers don't take
any risk and simply put mainstream-music on their lists. Maybe it has something
to do with money, I don't know…
Kees: I think because it's not commercial at this time. Maybe in the future
some big-shot producers will see the light (again). But don't worry, SKA will
allways be appreciated by people.
Arnoud: For a lot of people, SKA is quite unknown and obscure. They often recognize
the up-beat, but don't know it's SKA. I suppose most of the music-listeners
are simply music-consumers, that are not really into a music-scene, but simply
like to listen to all kinds of music.
DerDUDE:
Which band or ska CD do you recommend (apart from your own) to the people out
there?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lilian: Pick it up! That's a collection of SKA-music from the south of Holland.
Kees: the Scofflaws - SKA in Hifi
Arnoud: Surprise: The Beat
DerDUDE:
Who, in your eyes is the "Godfather of Ska"?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Kees: Prince Buster or Desmond Dekker
DerDUDE:
Which ska site do you particularly recommend? What are your favourites?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
www.SKApeople.nl
DerDUDE:
What's going to be coming up in terms of gigs or any other projects? Is there
a new CD coming out?
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
We have to finish our work on the new CD first, but we're already working on
some new songs, so visit our website regularly. We want to release our CD somewhere
coming autumn, and then it's time for many, maaaaany gigs!
DerDUDE:
A bit of space for your own comments and anything else you want to add!!!...
Boter, SKA & eieren (B.S.E.):
Lots of luck with www.DerDude-Goes-SKA.de
and thanks for your attention!!!
Keep on SKAnkin'!!!
DerDUDE:
Thanks the interesting interview!
